Pearl Thusi reveals how her late mother shaped her views on marriage

by Staff Bona

South African actress and media personality Pearl Thusi has candidly shared how her late mother’s experiences in marriage profoundly influenced her own outlook on relationships and commitment.

Speaking on The Motherhood Network podcast with Nandi Madida, she revealed that she has spent much of her adult life avoiding marriage because of what she witnessed growing up. The star explained that her parents’ relationship left a lasting impression, particularly after seeing her mother endure significant challenges within the marriage.

A personal perspective on love and commitment

During the emotional conversation, Pearl reflected on how her mother’s struggles shaped her beliefs about traditional marriage. She admitted that, for years, she associated marriage with pain and loss rather than lifelong partnership.

The actress also spoke about the complicated relationship she had with her father, describing him as a loving parent while acknowledging the difficulties that existed between her parents. These experiences contributed to her cautious approach to marriage and long-term commitment.

Open to love, but on her own terms

While Thusi remains sceptical about the institution of marriage, she emphasised that she is not opposed to love. Instead, she believes couples should define commitment in a way that feels authentic to them.

Her comments have resonated with many South Africans who have experienced the long-term effects of witnessing unhealthy relationships during childhood. Her honesty also highlights a broader conversation about how family dynamics can shape adult views on love, relationships and marriage.

The actress has previously spoken publicly about her deep admiration for her late mother, often crediting her for the strength, resilience and values that continue to guide her life today.
