South African global superstar Tyla is set to make history after being selected to perform the South African national anthem at the 2026 FIFA World Cup opening ceremony.

Soccer Laduma reported that the Grammy-winning singer will take centre stage ahead of Bafana Bafana’s opening match against Mexico at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on 11 June 2026, marking a major moment for both her career and South African music on the global stage.

A proud moment for South Africa

Tyla’s performance is expected to take place just before kick-off, as millions of viewers around the world tune in to watch the opening match of football’s biggest tournament. She will represent South Africa during the anthem, while Mexican singer Alejandro Fernández is set to perform Mexico’s national anthem for the host nation.

This moment is not only significant for Tyla but also for South Africa, as the country returns to the World Cup stage, making the performance even more symbolic.

The 2026 World Cup is unique, featuring multiple opening ceremonies across host countries — Mexico, the United States and Canada — highlighting a diverse mix of global music and culture.
