The creator recently shared his experience, reflecting on how a social media post made while he was still in high school continues to affect his life years later.
Nobangela’s viral clip that led to legal trouble
According to Nobangela, the saga began in 2024 when he mocked plus-size influencer Dominic Zaca in a promotional video. The clip sparked outrage online and eventually resulted in legal action being taken against him.
The matter was reportedly settled with an agreement that included a R45,000 payment and a public apology. However, Nobangela’s response to the situation allegedly further complicated matters. Instead of bringing the issue to a close, his mocking reaction to the settlement kept the dispute alive and attracted additional scrutiny.
University dreams derailed
Nobangela explained that the repercussions resurfaced this year when he applied to study at university.
During the application process, a police clearance check reportedly flagged the unresolved matter, creating obstacles for his admission. The situation eventually led to his arrest and a period of incarceration.
The content creator says the fallout has now left him with a criminal record and a five-year ban that prevents him from pursuing tertiary studies, dramatically altering the future he had envisioned for himself.

Divided reactions online
His story has sparked widespread debate on social media, with South Africans divided over whether the punishment fits the offence.
Some believe the outcome serves as an important reminder that hate speech and online harassment have consequences. They argue that content creators and social media users should be held accountable for harmful remarks, regardless of whether they are made for entertainment or online attention.
Others feel the punishment is excessive, particularly given Nobangela’s age at the time of the incident. Critics argue that a teenager seeking social media clout should not face consequences that could affect his education and career prospects for years to come.
Ayy naye how do you want to be a social worker but are homophobic 😭 https://t.co/wRW8d0whHc

Kwakhanya was on only 16 years old when he was killed by homophobic teenagers. Nobangelo was also 16 years old when he spewed homophobic insults at Dominic. If a child can die due to homophobic violence, a child can also face consequences for perpetuating homophobia. https://t.co/qntkFvO6t0 pic.twitter.com/6t241QS23c

I feel for him sure… but he was asked to make a video apologizing to Dominic for what he said to him and he did not. Dominic said he will drop the case when he sees the apology video. He was old enough to boldly say mean things he knew the meaning of the things he was saying.… https://t.co/BDqCuuJEz5

A lesson about social media accountability
The case has reignited conversations about the impact of online behaviour and the responsibilities that come with having a public platform.
As social media continues to blur the lines between digital interactions and real-world consequences, Nobangela’s experience serves as a cautionary tale about how a single post can have lasting effects long after it disappears from timelines and trending pages.
Whether viewed as accountability or excessive punishment, the case has become a powerful example of how South Africa’s laws relating to hate speech and online conduct can carry consequences that extend far beyond the internet.
