In response, Zee Nxumalo defended her achievement, explaining that the billboard was part of a Spotify campaign and not something she had personally funded.

A major moment for South African music

The New York billboard marks another milestone in Zee’s fast-rising career. The singer has become one of South Africa’s most-streamed young artists, earning widespread recognition for her contribution to the local music scene and the growing popularity of amapiano.

For many fans, the Spotify billboard represents more than just a marketing campaign. It reflects the increasing global visibility of South African artists and the international appetite for local music genres.

Fans rally behind the star

While opinions on the debate remain divided, many social media users praised Zee for defending her accomplishment and highlighting the work required to earn recognition from major global platforms.

“Spotify picks based on streams and cultural impact. You can’t buy your way onto that wall. Big up!” commented one X user.

“And why would it be a problem even if she did? That would just go to show that she has the money… evidently way more than you ever will,” said another.

As South African music continues to make waves worldwide, Zee’s latest achievement serves as a reminder of how local talent is increasingly commanding attention on the global stage.
