After rapper Cassper Nyovest announced that he would be releasing his new single, Phunyuka Bamphethe, on Friday, 22 May 2026, one fan wondered whether the project would be enough to save South African hip hop. In response to the thought, Cassper spoke his mind about his treatment in the scene.

Cassper shared that his upcoming track offers a new sound and a new character, giving people a glimpse of how the star plans to contribute to the art form uniquely.

On 19 May 2026, the award-winning record producer, born Refiloe Phoolo, spoke his truth and told the X user (@GeorgeBeatsSA):

“How is that pressure put on me now when SA hip hop says I’m not the one? I’m the one guy who’s written off at all times, no matter how good the music or the numbers are.”

He then asked to be left alone so that he could do as he pleases, noting that while the disrespect has been loud, he needed to be louder. He added, “I don’t care anymore. I’m doing me! This run is for ME and whoever is going to like what I’m doing. The rest can honestly jump off a bridge.”

How is that pressure put on me now when SA Hip Hop says I’m not the one. I’m the one guy that’s written off at all times, no matter how good the music or the numbers are. I’d like to be left alone nje so I can just do what I want. The disrespect has been loud and I need it to be… https://t.co/e0n74tmzGe

Mzansi comments on Cassper Nyovest’s take

Several local social media users gathered in the comments to express their thoughts about Cassper’s response to saving the local hip hop scene.

@findolicious, who seemed to be a fan, said, “Just do you and what’s best and what you love. Haters will never stop yapping for no reason! Don’t depress yourself trying to please everyone. Your true fans love you.”

@QSitholeking compared Cassper to Drake, writing, “You’re the needle mover in this whole genre, but critics try to convince all of us that you aren’t. Keep your head up, your mission is far greater than what a critic can ever imagine. Cut the noise and continue moving forward with grace. You’re the one.”

@ShaneScott__ added their opinion in the comment section, “Bro, you have 14 years in the game and you are still emotional like an upcoming artist. You already tick all the boxes. I don’t know why you’re responding.”
