Multi-award-winning pop star Tyla had South Africans and her fans beaming with pride as she made history with her 2026 BET Awards nomination for Video of the Year. The songstress has become the first African artist to be nominated in the category for her hit track Chanel, which she released last year.

The vibrant video included vintage Chanel pieces, such as the hula hoop bag from the brand’s 2013 spring/summer collection.
Who else is in the BET Awards Video of the Year category?
Tyla is up against a few strong contenders, who all made their mark as their creativity oozed through screens. Below are the other nominees:

The South African star, who never fails to entertain her fans, was also nominated for the BET Awards’ Viewers’ Choice, which also gives a nod to Chanel.

Chanel’s impact on social media
Since the release of Chanel, many social media users have used their audio in their videos. The track became a huge success on TikTok, where one creator, @kipittok, choreographed a dance routine to the catchy chorus. Tyla hopped onto the trend and shared a clip of herself and friends taking on the choreography, which included the signature Chanel logo made with their hands.

More than 4.4 million videos have included the song on the social media platform, a testament to Tyla’s project’s success.
The 2026 BET Awards, hosted by comedian Druski, is scheduled to air live on Sunday, 28 June 2026, at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles.
