The Western Cape Education Department has closed selected schools in the Cape Winelands and Eden, and Central Karoo regions due to heavy wind and rainfall that have decimated the Cape region.

In the interests of learner and teacher safety, and after extensive consultation with the Provincial Disaster Management Centre and the South African Weather Service (SAWS), a decision was taken to close schools in certain areas of the Cape Winelands Education District for Monday, 11 May 2026.
Affected schools received an official notice of the closure from the Head of Department.

All other schools in the Western Cape are still open, unless approval has been granted for closure or early send-home, which will be communicated to those schools.

With continuous monitoring and communication, the SAWS is currently evaluating the situation to ensure safety for everyone and that schools can reopen as soon as possible.

All schools are expected to open on Tuesday, 12 May 2026, unless the Western Cape Education Department has communicated further changes.
