Shebeshxt’s bail application continues as court hears urgent medical concerns

by Zintle Mdaka

The bail application of Lehlogonolo Chauke is ongoing at the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court, with proceedings this week focusing on new arguments centred around his health.

Lehlogonolo, popularly known as Shebeshxt, has been in custody since November 2025 following a shooting incident that led to serious charges, including attempted murder and firearm-related offences. Previous attempts to secure bail were unsuccessful, with both the magistrate’s court and a subsequent High Court appeal denying his release.

In the latest proceedings, his legal team has introduced what they describe as “new facts,” arguing that Shebeshxt requires urgent medical attention. According to testimony presented in court, he is experiencing ongoing pain linked to injuries sustained earlier, with concerns raised about a metal screw in his leg that is reportedly loosening. Medical professionals have indicated that surgical intervention on his leg and shoulder may be necessary.

The defence contends that these medical needs cannot be adequately addressed while Shebeshxt remains in custody, and that bail would allow him access to appropriate treatment. However, the case falls under Schedule 6 offences, which carry stricter bail conditions, requiring the accused to demonstrate exceptional circumstances to justify release.

The state is expected to oppose the application, maintaining that the seriousness of the charges and the circumstances surrounding the case weigh against granting bail.

Outside the courtroom, the case continues to draw public attention. Supporters, including Shebeshxt’s partner, have called for leniency and rallied behind him on social media, while others argue that the gravity of the allegations should take precedence over personal considerations.

As the hearing continues, the court is expected to weigh the medical evidence against the legal threshold required for bail in serious offences. A decision has not yet been handed down, leaving Shebeshxt’s immediate future uncertain as proceedings unfold.
