Exploring the magical Karoo, a South African escape

The beauty of the Karoo lies in its open spaces and unique sparkling skies that showcase Mzansi at its finest.

It is a kind of beauty that invites you to reflect and truly appreciate the present moment the Karoo offers.

While some travellers prefer the coast reserves, the Karoo offers something quieter and more grounding, not flashy or fast-paced, just perfect and serene.

It is certainly one of those interesting places you get lost in. The magical region of the Karoo represents a stretch of semi-desert land of the Cape, a fascinating landscape with hilltops, rivers and quaint farms with clean air and darkest night skies.

So why should you plan your drives along this route?

According to IOL, across the Karoo, a quiet luxury movement takes hold from railway sidings with remote dorpies, boutique accommodations as you drive, with minimalist architecture that is immersed in nature, accompanied by silence, space and solitude.

Towns worth the detour

The Karoo’s small towns are worth the drive, with each one offering a different character to the driving experience. From Prince Albert, Cradock, Graaf-Reinet to Colesberg, all these towns offer something uniquely different.

The wildlife

Although the Karoo experience is seen as a drive-through destination, it offers far more if you take the time to stop. You can spot springboks, impalas and kudus grazing along the N1 route.

The snowfall

During some winters, the region experiences snowfall. Certain parts receive blankets of frost and little snowfall. Towns like Graaff-Reinet, Cradock, and Middelburg typically receive the most snow on a good winter’s day.
