Zwane is back and Chaine misses out in latest Bafana squad

by nikita.m

A few surprises in the latest Bafana squad

If you have been keeping an eye on local football, the latest Bafana Bafana squad announcement probably raised a few eyebrows.

Coach Hugo Broos has named his 23 man squad for the upcoming friendlies against Panama, and while some names feel familiar, others tell a different story.

One of the biggest talking points is the absence of Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine. After strong performances at club level, many expected him to be included. This time around, he has been left out.

But while one door closes, another opens. Themba Zwane is back.

Zwane’s return feels like home

There is something comforting about seeing Zwane’s name on the team sheet again.

The Mamelodi Sundowns star brings experience, calm and that special spark that Bafana often needs in big moments. His return adds a sense of balance to the squad, especially as the team continues to build towards bigger international tests.

Midfielder Jayden Adams also returns, giving Broos more options in the middle of the park.

A mix of local stars and overseas talent

This squad is not just about familiar faces. It is also about growth.

Germany based defender Ime Okon has earned a call up, while Mbekezeli Mbokazi will join the team from the United States. It is a reminder that South African talent is making waves beyond our borders.

Back home, players from clubs like Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates and Sekhukhune United continue to form the backbone of the team.

Tough calls between the posts

The goalkeeping department is where things get interesting.

Ronwen Williams remains the first choice, with Ricardo Goss and Renaldo Leaner backing him up. Leaner’s inclusion shows that Broos is willing to give new faces a chance, even in key positions.

Still, Chaine’s absence will be a talking point for many fans.

Cape Town and Durban set for Bafana action

Bafana will take on Panama twice in what promises to be exciting fixtures.

The first match takes place at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on 27 March, followed by a second clash at DHL Stadium in Cape Town on 31 March.

For fans in Cape Town, this is a special moment. It is not every day that the national team plays in the city, and the atmosphere is expected to be electric.

Building Something Bigger

More than anything, this squad feels like part of a bigger plan.

It is a mix of trusted leaders and rising stars, all working towards the same goal. As Bafana continue their journey, these matches against Panama are about more than just results. They are about finding rhythm, building confidence and shaping what comes next.

And for fans, it is another chance to rally behind the team and believe in what is being built.
