The dust has barely settled on one of the most dramatic Africa Cup of Nations finals in recent memory, and already the controversy has moved off the pitch and into the boardrooms.
The Royal Moroccan Football Federation has confirmed it will formally appeal to both Confederation of African Football and FIFA following Senegal’s temporary walk-off during Sunday night’s AFCON final in Rabat.
While Senegal ultimately lifted the trophy with a 1–0 extra-time victory, the hosts believe the events late in regulation time crossed a line and disrupted the integrity of the match.

The moment that changed the final
With the clock ticking down in stoppage time, tension inside the stadium reached boiling point. A Senegal goal was ruled out before the Video Assistant Referee intervened at the other end, leading to Morocco being awarded a penalty.
The decision sparked furious protests from the Senegal bench. Head coach Pape Thiaw instructed his players to leave the field, bringing the final to a complete standstill. Players, officials and supporters waited through a lengthy delay before Senegal eventually returned.
Fourteen minutes later, Brahim Diaz stepped up, only for Édouard Mendy to produce a decisive save that sent the contest into extra time. Senegal would then find the breakthrough and claim their second AFCON crown.
Why Morocco are appealing
In a strongly worded statement, the Moroccan federation said it would file a complaint regarding Senegal’s withdrawal from the pitch and the incidents that followed.
According to the federation, the penalty decision was unanimously confirmed by match officials and the subsequent walk-off significantly affected the rhythm of the game and the morale of Moroccan players.
The appeal will now be reviewed within the legal frameworks of CAF and FIFA, adding another chapter to an already controversial tournament finale.
A nation proud but frustrated
Beyond the formal complaint, Morocco’s statement struck a more emotional note. The federation thanked supporters who packed the stands throughout the tournament, describing their backing as loyal, passionate and exemplary.
For Moroccan fans, this final carried extra weight. Hosting AFCON brought with it a sense of national pride and expectation, especially after recent World Cup and continental success. Social media reflected that mood, with many supporters expressing heartbreak at the result but anger at what they felt was a chaotic ending that overshadowed the football.
Others praised Senegal’s resilience, acknowledging that while the scenes were ugly, the Teranga Lions still found a way to win on the night.
A bigger conversation for African football
The fallout has reignited wider debate around officiating, VAR implementation and discipline at major African tournaments. While VAR is designed to bring clarity, moments like this highlight how quickly matches can spiral when decisions are contested and emotions run high.
CAF and FIFA now face the task of reviewing the incident and deciding whether any further action is warranted. Whatever the outcome, the 2025 AFCON final will be remembered as much for its controversy as for Senegal’s triumph.
For Morocco, the appeal is about more than one decision. It is about drawing a line under a night where football briefly lost control of its own spectacle.
