Meet Uncle Don: The 50-Year-Old TikTok Star Who Won Drake’s Heart

by Zaghrah Anthony

Dancing Through Life: Uncle Don’s Rise from Dududu to Global Fame

In the small town of Dududu, KwaZulu-Natal, a familiar smile and boundless energy have captured the hearts of millions. Emmanuel Madonsela, affectionately known online as Uncle Don, didn’t start his journey on a stage or behind a DJ console. His story began in the quiet aisles of Makro, where he worked and found joy in dancing to House music during his breaks.

Clad in his Makro uniform, Uncle Don’s impromptu dance videos first delighted local colleagues before exploding on TikTok. Soon, he wasn’t just “the dancing uncle at Makro”—he was a symbol of joy, resilience, and the unshakable belief that happiness can be contagious.

From TikTok to Drake: A Dream Unfolds

2024 brought a life-changing opportunity. US artists Gordo and Drake noticed Uncle Don’s infectious energy and featured him in the music video for their song Healing. The video, shot documentary-style in Dududu, highlighted Uncle Don’s daily life: morning walks with his wife, time with his children, and a devotion that had him walking roughly 14 kilometres to work every day, rain or shine.

The culmination of this journey was unforgettable. At the video’s end, Uncle Don and his family were surprised with a brand-new VW Polo Vivo. His disbelief and joy, mirrored by his wife’s celebration, became a viral moment, a testament to how small acts of kindness can transform lives.

Even Gordo, unable to attend in person, said the highlight for him was witnessing Uncle Don’s reaction. “It reminded me that joy exists even in the hardest seasons,” he reflected.

Learning, Growing, and Dancing Again at 50

Far from slowing down at 50, Uncle Don has embraced a new chapter: learning to DJ. Sharing every practice, event, and inspiration with his followers—many from South Africa’s top DJs like Black Coffee and Oscar Mbo—he’s building a community of 218,000 people who cheer him on relentlessly. His TikTok is more than entertainment; it’s a space of encouragement, reminding everyone that passion and purpose can bloom at any age.

He often cites Morgan Freeman’s late-blooming career as inspiration, encouraging his followers to chase dreams regardless of age. In his words, “Stepping into your calling later in life is still stepping into your calling.”

Style, Sound, and Second Chances

Beyond music, Uncle Don’s journey has transformed his style. The Makro uniform is now a thing of the past, replaced by trendsetting outfits befitting an internet icon. Yet, the essence remains the same: a man who lives and breathes rhythm, believing in the power of music to heal, connect, and return people to themselves.

Uncle Don’s story resonates because it’s more than viral fame—it’s a celebration of second chances. It’s a reminder that age is never a barrier to joy, reinvention, or following your true calling.

In Dududu, Emmanuel Madonsela isn’t just a TikTok star. He’s proof that life, like music, can surprise you when you least expect it.
