Leon Schuster’s life and career retold in 5-part documentary

by Sergio Miller

After amusing millions of South Africans for decades, one of the country’s most renowned entertainers will soon give viewers a glimpse into his life.

What is South African culture without the inclusion of the ultimate prankster, Leon Schuster? The 74-year-old is known to be a jack of all trades, from actor to comedian, and not to forget, his unbelievable vocal abilities as a musician.

From the 1st of October, viewers will get a closer glimpse into his life away from the acting world as he is set to premiere his five-part documentary, showcasing his life in a way that it has never been seen before. The docuseries promises to be filled with raw emotion and candid moments, and will premiere on KykNET (channel 144).

“I hope viewers get the truth. The raw truth. Not the Schucks’ truth, the Mr Bones truth, or the Mama Jack truth – the Leon truth. Comedians are usually associated with clowns and jokers, but inherently, they are actually very deep people. And I think a little of that depth shines through,” Leon said in an interview.

Meanwhile, Rian van Heerden, whose production company, Provoco, is behind the series, described Leon as being a national treasure and said he was surprised that one of the most recognisable faces of our lifetime’s story had not yet been told.

“I wanted to take on the challenge and in the process help immortalise his legacy,” he said.

When asked about how he wanted people to remember him, Leon said:

“As someone who brought joy to South Africans – someone who brought people together. There’s nothing better than making someone laugh.”
