From Divorce to Dad of 12
Nick Cannon, the multi-talented TV host, musician, and entrepreneur, has opened up candidly about why he fathered 12 children. Speaking on the “Breakfast Club” radio show, Cannon described his actions as a mix of carelessness and unresolved trauma following his divorce from singer Mariah Carey, which ended in 2016.
“I never set out to have 12 kids,” Cannon admitted. “It wasn’t about acting out. It was being careless, being frivolous because I could—because I had the money, access, and freedom to live my life however I wanted.”
The television star shares twins Moroccan and Monroe, now 14, with Carey. His other ten children come from various relationships, including Golden (8), Powerful (4), and Rise (2) with Brittany Bell; twins Zillion and Zion (3) and Beautiful (2) with Abby De La Rosa; Legendary (2) with Bre Tiesi; Onyx (2) with LaNisha Cole; and Halo (2) with Alyssa Scott, who tragically passed away from infant complications at five months.
Healing After Heartbreak
Cannon reflected that the divorce left him damaged, and he didn’t take the necessary time for personal healing. “Being almost 45 now, I could sit back and see that if I had thought the process through more and done the inner work, things might have been different,” he said.
Despite the large family, Cannon emphasized that all his children were conceived out of love. “Every child that I had was made out of love, and there were strong relationships,” he shared. “But instead of fixing the trauma at its origin, I was leaving trauma every step of the way.”
Pressing Pause, Not Stop
While Cannon has no immediate plans to expand his family, he left the door open for the future. In an interview with People magazine, he explained, “I’m going to press hold on this 12 for right now. But three years from now, or five years from now? Who knows? I’m not against it.”
This revelation adds another layer to the ongoing public fascination with Cannon, who has been both celebrated and scrutinized for his large, blended family. Social media reactions have ranged from admiration for his candor to questions about the challenges of fathering multiple children across different households.
Celebrity Fatherhood in Context
Cannon’s reflections highlight a broader cultural conversation about celebrity fatherhood, mental health, and responsibility. In a world where fame often provides financial freedom but not emotional guidance, his story serves as both caution and confession. For many, it’s a reminder that trauma can influence life choices, even for those in the public eye.
With his honesty and humor, Cannon continues to navigate fatherhood under the spotlight, balancing personal growth, family life, and the curiosity of a global audience.
