Mzansi’s popiano princess and global icon, Tyla Seethal added to her highly-decorated trophy cabinet at the recent MTV Video Music Awards (VMA) when she took home the ‘Best Afrobeats’ award for the second year in a row.

Whether it be sports, music, culture or art, South Africa has identified itself as a notable contender as far as global pop culture is concerned. From the Springboks’ utter domination, to Bafana Bafana’s renewed confidence, as well as local artists continuing to steal the show on various international stages, the South African flag is yet to get a break from being flown high with pride.

After breaking into the tough music industry, and cementing herself as someone to keep an eye out for, Tyla continues to forge an uncharted path to superstardom. Two years into her international career, the Mr Media hit-maker has been slowly building quite the catalogue, which has allowed her to build quite the impressive awards collection.

Recently, she took to the 2025 MTV VMAs, where she was a nominee in the ‘Best Afrobeats’ for her smash summer hit Push 2 Start, and ‘Best Choreography’ for the song’s music video, which had social media users in a chokehold earlier this year. With the whole of South Africa, and the rest of the world behind her, Tyla came out victorious in the ‘Best Afrobeats‘ category, despite going against heavyweights such as Burna Boy,. Asake, Rema, Tems, Wiz Kid and Ayra Starr.

As always, the South African superstar looked immaculate in a small nude Chanel number, in honour of her highly-anticipated hit with the same name. With this win, she becomes the most highly-decorated African artist at the VMAs.
