Floyd Shivambu, founder of the Afrika Mayibuye Movement, says he had a “productive” meeting with Zulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini during his visit to KwaZulu-Natal on Monday.

The discussions focused on the movement’s direction and the possibility of formally establishing a political party.

“Siyabonga Isilo sa Mabandla, our King Misuzulu ka Zwelithini, Indlulamithi for giving us the blessings and guidance! We will tirelessly work with Royal leadership in the entire country to bring about true liberation, prosperity and freedom. We are grateful! Mayibuye iAfrika!,” he wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter)

He insisted that the movement is not a breakaway from any existing party, including the MK Party, EFF, or ANC.

Speaking to volunteers in Durban on Sunday, he said that Mayibuye iAfrika exists independently and aims to grow larger than all three parties, incorporating labour unions, civic organisations, and NGOs to build a broad-based political force.

Floyd told supporters that the movement should not be seen as a faction or splinter group, welcoming members from MK, EFF, ANC, and DA, but making clear that it is its own organisation.

“One thing that we must understand as volunteers and ground forces of Mayibuye is that the iAfrika Mayibuye movement is not a breakaway from uMkhonto weSizwe. It’s not a breakaway from the EFF. It’s not a breakaway from the ANC,” he said.

“It’s an organisation that exists by itself and is going to be bigger than uMkhonto weSizwe, will be bigger than the EFF, and will be bigger than the ANC.”

Floyd, who has previously held leadership roles in the ANC, EFF, and MK Party, vowed that the movement will recognise the importance of traditional and royal leaders in South Africa.
