Experimental father’s day gifts to try this year

by Staff Bona

Let’s be honest—Dad doesn’t need another pair of novelty socks or a lukewarm, heart-shaped breakfast in bed.

This Father’s Day, go beyond the basics and spoil the father figure in your life with an experience he’ll actually remember (and brag about).

From whiskey pairings to pottery-making and expertly grilled steaks, here are our favourite hands-on, taste-filled ways to celebrate Dad this year.

Things to do with Dad this Father’s Day:

Whiskey pairing at Beluga

For the sophisticated sipper who loves bold flavours

From 13–16 June, treat Dad to a decadent whiskey pairing at Beluga, featuring Johnnie Walker Black, Gold, and Green labels paired with bold bites like smoked salmon, blue cheese, and chocolate truffles.

With a whiskey sommelier guiding the tasting and a cosy wintery vibe, it’s a flavourful escape from the norm.

Location: Beluga, Cape Town
Dates: 13–16 June
Cost: R395 pp | Booking essential

Steak, Brandy and Smoked Salt at Char’d Grill & Wine Bar

For the dad who loves his meat aged and his brandy smooth

Char’d in Hermanus is making Father’s Day a smoky, meaty affair with their R300 lunch special. Dad will enjoy a 300g chef’s cut of perfectly aged meat—wet and dry aged to perfection—paired with a smooth Cape Brandy tasting. As a bonus, he gets to take home a jar of their signature in-house smoked Himalayan salt.

Location: Char’d Grill & Wine Bar, Hermanus
Dates: Sunday, 15 June | 11:30 am–9 pm
Cost: R300 pp | Book via Dineplan

Mediterranean feasting at Mezepoli

For the foodie dad who loves to share and snack

If your dad’s love language is mezze and cocktails, Mezepoli delivers with its chic Mediterranean menu.

With locations in Johannesburg and Pretoria, it’s an accessible and flavour-packed way to spend quality time together—book a table or surprise him with a gift voucher.

Location: Mezepoli, Johannesburg and Pretoria
Dates: Open all Father’s Day weekend
Cost: Gift vouchers available.

Clay dates and Dad-made bowls

For the dad who likes to get hands-on (and maybe a little messy)

Swap golf for glazing with a fun and therapeutic pottery class. Create with Clay is hosting a Father’s Day workshop on 14 June, where you and Dad can hand-build a pot and throw bowls on the wheel.

Other local studios like Clay Cafe, Calico Ceramics, and Clay Hands also offer Father’s Day specials—ideal for memory-making and maybe even a new family heirloom.

Location: Various locations, Cape Town & surrounds
Dates: Saturday, 14 June | check availability at other locations
Cost: Prices vary, booking essential

Carvery & Craft Beer at the 12 Apostles Hotel

For the dad who appreciates good food, good beer, and a good view

Celebrate Father’s Day in coastal luxury with a carvery lunch at the Azure Restaurant.

Dad can savour perfectly carved South African meats, sip on a curated craft beer flight, and enjoy live music—all while soaking in that epic Atlantic Ocean backdrop.

Location: Azure Restaurant, 12 Apostles Hotel & Spa
Dates: Sunday, 15 June | 1 pm–3 pm
Cost: R925 pp

Coffee in Cape Town with mischu

For the dad who won’t start the day without a strong cup

Take Dad for a morning stroll along the Sea Point promenade, followed by breakfast at mischu, where the Isabella blend (named after the owner’s daughter) has won national awards.

It’s a heartfelt touch to your morning out, and their chicken and avocado flatbread wrap will hit the spot.

Location: mischu, Sea Point
Dates: 14 June: 6:45 am–5:30 pm | 15 June: 7:30 am–5 pm
Cost: Wraps from R115
