Baking ideas to warm up your home

by Akhona Ndlela

Baking turns into a warm embrace when the weather becomes cold or you’re in the mood for something that is comforting.

It has the ability to instantly change spaces and moods, whether you’re trying something new or revisiting childhood favourites.

Baking with loved ones, especially with the holidays coming up, can still be enjoyed in those cold, winter mornings as they warm the heart and the house.

Those small moments between messy counters, sneaking tastes and laughing are what make memories last a lifetime, uniting generations.

The well-loved classics of South Africa offer delectable nostalgia and cosy scents while contributing cultural flavour.

Prepare to bake your way to a home that is cosier, happier, and tastier by lighting the oven and dusting off your apron.

  • We can kick off the list with my family’s favourite, amagwinya(Vetkoeke/Fatcakes), which are golden, deep-fried vetkoeke stuffed with cheese, jam, or mince (the meatier the better, honestly!) for a tasty treat.
  • Even the gloomiest days are made more beautiful, happy, and sweet with my cousin’s perfect combo: her fluffiest scones and Queen&Me jam.
  • Make a rich malva pudding with custard, it’s spongy, sweet and a staple on South African dinner tables.
  • When dipped in tea, buttermilk rusks are perfect for winter mornings and leave your kitchen smelling beautiful.
  • Make banana bread or chocolate chip cookies for a crowd-pleasing treat that fills the house with a delightful aroma.
  • Simple, flavourful baked treats such as cheesy garlic bread, sugar biscuits, or savoury muffins are ideal for bringing some warmth to your home.
