Nara Smith whips up pap and gravy in heartfelt tribute to her roots

Social media influencer Nara Smith pays tribute to her roots with her latest kitchen creation.

In her most recent cooking video on TikTok, the model – elegantly dressed, rocking braids, and speaking in her signature soothing tone – takes on a South African staple: pap and gravy.

She begins the video by sharing a personal memory: “Growing up, my mom would make one South African dish over and over again… Lately, I’ve been missing my mom a lot and craving her cooking.”

Nara then walks viewers through the recipe, step by step, from preparing the maize meal to serving up the final dish.

The video has already racked up 3.5 million views and over 430,000 likes, with many fans appreciating the nod to her South African heritage.

Born in Bloemfontein, Nara moved abroad with her family at a young age. She is now married to model Lucky Blue Smith, and together they share three children: son Slim Easy, and daughters Rumble Honey and Whimsy Lou.

Coincidentally, just a month earlier, Grammy-winning musician Tyla showcased her cooking skills in a British Vogue feature, preparing pap and wors.

She made history as the first South African to grace the cover of the iconic glossy magazine. The ‘Water’ singer had previously mentioned that she always carries a bag of maize meal in her Givenchy purse.

In true Tyla fashion, the video was as entertaining as it was informative, with Tyla walking viewers through her preparation with her unique charm and wit.

Last year, discussions arose about similarities between Nara’s content and that of South African chef and content creator Onezwa Mbola. The matter even saw legal involvement at one point.
