What if everything you knew about Pilates was wrong?

If you’re looking for something challenging and fun, pilates is like the cool friend who’s always down for a good time but also keeps you in check, and we like the sound of that.

Hear me out: Pilates, the subtle superhero your body has been waiting for, despite its reputation for being the fancy yoga version.

Consider it your go-to tool for improving your strength, flexibility, and balance without having to run a marathon or perform a headstand. It’s also an enjoyable and efficient workout!

Well+Good highlights that Joseph Pilates developed the standard technique known as “classical pilates,” which uses mat work and equipment. While mat Pilates employs body weight to provide resistance and improve strength, contemporary Pilates incorporates fresh research and equipment to create new workouts.

Why is Pilates so unique?

According to Pilates.com, “Pilates exercises develop a strong ‘core’ or centre of the body. The core consists of the deep abdominal muscles closest to the spine. Control of the core is achieved by integrating the trunk, pelvis and shoulder girdle. The core is critical in all functional movement in everyday life.”

So, it is all about that centre, to start. Although having six-pack abs is a lovely bonus, the above source further adds that Pilates increases joint mobility and muscular suppleness by lengthening and strengthening muscles. An injury is less likely to occur in a Pilates body with balanced strength and flexibility.

It is ideal for everyone, from fitness experts to beginners, because it is also quite easy on the joints. The above-mentioned website further adds that the majority of the exercises are low-impact and slightly weight-bearing, and several are done while sitting or lying down. “Pilates is so safe and appropriate for everyone that it is used in physical therapy facilities to rehabilitate injuries.”

Here’s some advice for beginners: don’t worry about being flawless! Take beginner classes at first, and pay attention to your breathing and your body. It’s all about making little, accurate movements – quality over quantity.

Get your mat out, discover your inner power, and prepare to make Pilates your new best friend in the gym.
