Joe Slovo Secondary School in Khayelitsha is celebrating a stunning turnaround after achieving a 99.3% matric pass rate for 2024, a dramatic leap from 37% in 2021.

The announcement has been met with joy and pride from the school’s principal, teachers, and students, as scenes of celebration unfolded on Tuesday, 14 January.

TikTok user @CapeTown_Bru shared the celebrations on his account:

The school has also been named Cape Town’s most improved school by Smile 90.4FM, a recognition well-deserved after years of dedicated effort.

Education MEC David Maynier joined the celebrations at the school, commending the team on their extraordinary progress. ‘As soon as I saw Joe Slovo’s results, I knew I had to visit and celebrate with them,’ he said.

The 2024 results not only mark the school’s highest matric pass rate since the introduction of the National Senior Certificate in 2008 but also highlight significant gains in academic performance.

The bachelor’s pass rate more than doubled from 25.1% in 2023 to 56.2% in 2024, while the school achieved 41 subject distinctions, including six in Mathematics and three in Physical Science.

Two students scored over 90% in Mathematics, and the pass rates for Mathematics and Physical Science soared to 96% and 85.2%, respectively.

Principal Sithyilelo Ntamo credited the entire school community for this success. ‘Our teachers introduced innovative methods to improve learning, security staff ensured a safe environment, and kitchen staff kept learners nourished and focused,’ he said.

This achievement reflects a broader improvement across Khayelitsha schools. In 2009, only 50.5% of candidates in the area passed matric, with just 9.3% earning bachelor’s passes.

By 2024, these figures had risen to 87.6% and 47.8%, respectively. Maynier attributed this progress to years of hard work by learners, educators and the support of the Metro East Education District.

Joe Slovo Secondary’s incredible turnaround is a testament to perseverance, innovation and community support, providing an inspiring example of what is possible in South African education.
