When temperatures soar, pets deserve a cool treat, too! Making frozen goodies at home is not only fun but ensures your pets enjoy safe and healthy snacks. Here are three simple and delicious frozen treat recipes for dogs and cats.

For dogs

  1. Peanut butter & banana pupsicles

Ingredients:

  • 1 ripe banana
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted, xylitol-free peanut butter
  • 1 cup plain unsweetened yoghurt (or water)

Mash the banana and blend with peanut butter and yoghurt until smooth. Pour into silicone moulds or ice cube trays and freeze for 3-4 hours.

  1. Berry blast cubes

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup fresh blueberries
  • ½ cup fresh strawberries (hulled)
  • 1 cup water

Blend berries with water until slightly chunky. Pour the mixture into ice cube trays and freeze. Pop out a cube or two for your pup on a hot day.

  1. Chicken broth Iollies

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup low-sodium chicken broth (onion- and garlic-free)
  • 1 cup water

Optional: small carrot sticks for handles

Mix the broth and water, then pour into moulds. Insert carrot sticks as handles and freeze. Serve as a savoury treat to beat the heat!

For cats

  1. Tuna ice nibbles

Ingredients:

  • 1 small can tuna in water (unsalted)
  • ½ cup plain water

Mash the tuna and mix with water. Spoon the mixture into ice cube trays and freeze. Serve one or two cubes as a cool snack.

  1. Creamy salmon pops

Ingredients:

  • 1 small can salmon (unsalted)
  • ½ cup plain, lactose-free yogurt (or unsweetened coconut milk)

Blend salmon with yogurt or coconut milk until smooth. Pour into moulds and freeze. Offer these creamy treats on warm days.

  1. Catnip cubes

Ingredients:

  • 1 teaspoon dried catnip
  • 1 cup water

Brew the catnip in hot water and let it cool completely. Strain the liquid, pour into ice cube trays, and freeze. Let your cat bat around and lick these playful cubes.
