Nothing screams festive season quite like the sight of Christmas lights and eThekwini mayor Cyril Xaba has declared the holidays officially open as he led the commemoration of the activation of the popular Christmas lights.

Durban is one of the prominent cities popular for bringing immaculate vibes every festive season, largely due to its warm weather that perfectly caters to any and all festive season plans. Each year, the beginning of the festive season is marked by the activation of the Christmas lights that cover central Durban in vibrant, holiday-themed colours and lights.

Spearheading this commemoration ceremony was the mayor of the metropolitan, the ANC’s Cyril Xaba, who officially marked the highly anticipated and highly popular season open. The ceremony took place on the infamous Dr Pixley ka Seme Street (formerly West Street), and the display will be running until 3 January 2025 for all to marvel at.

There are also a variety of brand new attractions for locals and tourists alike to enjoy, such as the Build-a-bear Workshop as well as a Santa’s Workshop for the little one to express their creative side, as revealed by the mayor.

Addressing citizens, the mayor expressed well and warm wishes and reminded the people about the true essence and the importance of this period. Furthermore, he highlighted the city’s significant role as far as tourism is concerned, particularly in the festive season, and emphasised his and his team’s readiness to welcome the variety of faces that will be visiting the city.

Durban locals have also expressed excitement regarding the lights, they reminisce about their childhood and the impact the activation of the Christmas lights had on their younger selves. These users reveal that this was one of their fondest memories of their hometown, something which they took for granted and miss greatly.

Yep, I took this video when it was still bright at around 6:30pm but it still invoked that special Christmas feeling.
