SAMAs to shake things up with new changes in 2025

by Sergio Miller

Entries for the 31st edition of one of South Africa’s biggest music events, the South African Music Awards (SAMAs31) have now come with a few changes.

On Tuesday, the organisers of SAMAs and the Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA) released a statement highlighting that South Africa’s musical talents can now officially submit their years’ worth of hard work ahead of the award ceremony, which takes place next year.

For years the SAMAs have been seen as one of the biggest musical events on the local music calendar. It is here where some of the country’s top talents, have their creativity celebrated, while it has always been seen as the perfect platform to propel the careers of others. This is due to the industry’s ability to celebrate both established and emerging artists.

This year’s applications have opened on the 10th of December and will close on 31 of January.

According to the news and entertainment publication Daily Sun, the organisers of the event have opted to make a few adjustments to the time that the awards ceremony will be held. While it is often held towards the end of the year, changes have now been made to host the event in the first half of 2025.

Speaking to the above-mentioned publication, Nhlanhla Sibisi, CEO of the Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA), says that they are excited about what next year holds in store.

With the current adjustments to the date of the event, Nhlanhla explains that there a criteria when it comes to the music submitted as well.

“Entries eligible for a #SAMA31 consideration in over 30 genre categories should have been released between 16 April 2024 and 31 January 2025. They can be uploaded on our website or delivered physically.”

Meanwhile, they look forward to receiving a large number of entries ahead of the closing date.
