A list of 2024’s Top 5 hottest protective hairstyles

In 2024, just like fashion items, we have seen a rise in new and improved protective hairstyles, as many hairstylists channelled their inner artists. Making sure that their client’s hair stays ready and fresh.

While protective hairstyles help with your hair growth overdoing them can sometimes damage your hairline. When the sun is out, some people prefer to do these hairstyles as it can be too hot to install a wig, as the lace tends to melt causing your hair to look quite untidy.

If you are looking to change up your hairstyle this festive, these are the protective hairstyles that took the cup.

  1. Braided Updos (Box Braids, Fulani Braids, or Senegalese Twists)

You can never go wrong when it comes to braided updos, as they are very simple and quite low maintenance. They offer a polished look while keeping the hair protected from heat and styling damage. The nice thing about this hairstyle is that you can use any hair colour of your choice and size them the way you want.

2. Crochet Braids and Twists

According to haircare hub, Carrol’s Daughter, Crochet braiding is a protective styling technique that includes weaving human or synthetic hair into your hair. It differs from other braided styles in that it does not require braids. It uses loose extension hair, similar to box braids. Whether you want to rock curly, wavy, or straight hair, crochet methods allow for natural-looking results without the need for hours of hand-braiding.

3. Bantu Knots

Bantu knots have emerged as a bold and fashionable protective hairstyle that is both playful and chic. This style is perfect for those with curly and coil hair types, protecting them while also serving as a beautiful curl set when unravelled. Many are now embracing a two-in-one look, wearing the knots throughout the day and then taking them down in the evening for stunning curls.

4. Faux Locs

Faux locs are a chic way to achieve the look of dreadlocks without the commitment. These locs are often styled with a mix of loose, boho-inspired curls or sleek, polished finishes. This protective style is great for adding length and texture while keeping your natural hair tucked away.

5. Twist Outs & Senegalese Twists

In 2024, twist-outs, like Senegalese twists, are popular for their sleek, voluminous, low-maintenance, and long-lasting style, using synthetic hair for extra length and versatility.
