Retired Springbok rugby player Duane Vermeulen has expressed great disappointment as his business has become the latest target of a recent burglary.

In a recent Instagram post, Duane who won two Rugby World Cups and a British and Irish Lions series with the national team informed his followers that his De SluisHuis restaurant has had to shut its doors after it was recently broken into resulting several damages on the premises.

“It with great regret we have to share the sad news that De SluisHuis Padstal fell victim to a massive burglary incident that left our little gem with extensive damages.

“This has forced us to close temporarily to do repairs to get us back up and running! We apologise for any inconvenience and promise that we will work hard so all our loyal clients can pop in again soon to make memories,” he wrote.

The eatery is situated in Deneysville, on the banks of the Vaal Dam in the Free State Province and has become a popular spot for travellers who are looking to grab a bite while exploring the natural beauty of the iconic landmark and the rest of the province.

Duane and his wife Ezél Vermeulen bought the land just outside of Deneysville in 2020 from Ezél’s family hoping to continue the legacy of the family business and was officially opened in December 2023.
