The annual festive season is upon us, but as usual, no event officially ushers Capetonians into the holiday season like the Festive Lights Switch-on.
Known to be a major event on the local calendar, the celebration has been an integral part of Cape Town and its people for decades.
Every year locals are afforded the opportunity to be treated to live entertainment of some of the country’s most talented artists and television personalities. Ending the night Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis starts the countdown to the switching on of the festive lights in Cape Town’s Central Business District (CBD).
As usual, this year promises to live up to and, in some way, exceed expectations and Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has encouraged locals to come and partake in the excitement.
“Cape Town is a city of bright lights and even brighter people. The Festive Lights Switch-On is our chance to come together, acknowledge the year behind us and celebrate what is to come,” he says.

The lineup for this year includes a mixture of old with a touch of the new with a star-studded line-up that includes the legendary group Mafikizolo, the reggae melodies of Dr Victor and the Rusta Rebels, Mörda and Cape Town’s very own version of Luther Vandross – Fagrie Isaacs.
Keeping attendees entertained will be Ouma Sarie, DJ Ceycee and many more while Alan Committie and Lunga Tshuka take over the hosting duties.
The mayor believes that the lineup will certainly get him into the holiday spirit.
“It speaks to the joy, unity, and vibrancy that make Cape Town the heart of the holiday season in South Africa,” he said
The celebrations will take place on Sunday 1 December, 4 pm at the Grand Parade.
