The Proteas Women’s team have knocked Australia out of the running towards becoming the four-time consecutive T20 World Cup champions. These are words any cricket fan, particularly South African, never thought they would hear in this lifetime, however in the true spirit of being South African, the proteas have pulled off the nearly impossible.
The Proteas have stunned the sports world, as we all know, beating the Australian team is no easy feat. To paint a clear picture for you, this is a team that has won seven of the last eight cricket World Cups, except 2016 when they lost to the West Indies. Therefore, for the first time in 15 years, the Australian team will not feature in the T20 World Cup final.

The game was a rematch of last year’s final match-up, however, this time bore different results, with the Proteas taking Australia down by eight wickets. There were a few notable performances that helped the South African side with Nonkululeko Mlaba, the left-handed spinner being the first player to take 10 wickets in a single edition of the T20 World Cup and Anneke Bosch putting on the performance of her career and securing 74 unbeaten runs for her team.

The Proteas will take the winner of the West Indies vs New Zealand match-up in the final this coming Sunday, and the anticipation is palpable as Mzansi needs not to be told twice to rally together behind a sports team. This is a step in the right direction as women in sports have not always been supported in the same way as their male counterparts, despite producing better results.
