Reasons people choose celibacy

The decision of whether or not you should have sex is very personal, it is not dependant even on your spouse or partner. Therefore, one should never feel obligated to compromise their sexual health decisions, under any circumstance.

Choosing Therapy explains that living a celibate life means not having any sexual interactions or activities and that it could be voluntary or based on a certain experience. “Celibacy typically applies to sexual activity such as penetrative intercourse; however, someone that has chosen celibacy may abstain from other activities, such as intimate kissing.”

The medical information and health publication, Healthline, distinguishes the difference between celibacy and abstinence stating despite the common misconception that these two concepts are synonymous, they have different meanings.

It is further explained that refusing to engage in intimate sexual activity is commonly referred to as abstinence and it is usually only applicable for a set amount of time, such as until marriage. On the other hand, celibacy refers to a decision to stay away from sex for a lifetime.

According to Petar Bajic, assistant professor of urology at the Cleveland Clinic, people may choose to be celibate before marriage or a committed relationship, or for spiritual clarity. It is stated that celibacy can help build romantic relationships without sex pressure, focus on other important aspects of life, and grow spiritually in alignment with religious values.

WebMD believes that people choose celibacy to prevent pregnancy, focus on school or career, or manage mental and physical health concerns.

Sexual activity can cause toxic stress, leading to risks like sexually transmitted infections and pregnancy, therefore celibacy can reduce this stress by allowing individuals to focus on other aspects of their lives, states Choosing Therapy.

The publication mentions that celibacy can also provide identity for those who choose not to comply with societal expectations, giving them a sense of purpose. “Celibacy brings a new context that can bring self-awareness to physical urges or desires, you may have failed to notice or describe needs because you interpreted them as a sign of sexual frustration or needs. Choosing celibacy for a time can be a valuable form of mindfulness, even meditation, as you seek other satisfactions in life.”
