When it comes to the existence of mice lurking around our households, many would agree that this is a hindrance to living our lives with the freedom we wish.
Despite being tiny in stature, once comfortable in our homes these little pests can slowly but surely take over our entire home by nibbling on our food and causing damage to some of our furniture and appliances.
In addition to this, the pest control company Critter Control, notes that their presence may cause serious health-related problems to you and your family.
“Having an infestation of mice in your home can threaten the health of you and your family. Mice have been known to transmit a multitude of diseases like lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus, salmonella, hantavirus, leptospirosis, and even rat-bite fever,” explains the above-mentioned source.
Meanwhile, the Environment Protection Agency, based in the United States further explains that many of these viruses can be transmitted to humans through bite wounds, consumption of food, water, or breathing dust that has been contaminated by their droppings, as well as through ticks and fleas that have fed off infected mice.
While the days of spending money on multiple mouse traps have been a useful solution to get rid of them in the last, multiple sources have confirmed that if there is one thing these pests cannot stand, it is strong scents.
“Mice dislike strong, fresh odours. They tend to overwhelm rodents and their sense of smell, which scares them off. They avoid danger by relying on their keen sense of smell, which makes up for their weak eyesight. They rely on this sense to find food, detect danger, and follow scent trails as a way of navigation,” explains Earthkind.
According to the above-mentioned source the following act as useful repellents to get rid of them:
Lavender: They find the smell of lavender to be strong and unpleasant.
Peppermint oil: According to Earthkind, the strong aroma of peppermint oil similar to essential oils irritates their nose.
Vinegar solutions: The potent acrid smell of vinegar can cause mice to avoid such areas.
Cinnamon: “The strong, spicy scent of cinnamon can overwhelm a rodent’s strong sense of smell,” explains EarthKind.
