The annual concert to commemorate South Africa’s musical legends ‘The Night of Legends’ won’t be happening this year due to funding issues.

As per reports by entertainment publication, ZiMoja, the concert was hosted by renowned Kwaito legend and businessman Arthur Mafokate who has since had to halt this event due to not having funding.

The above-mentioned source adds that since the beginning of the concert, Arthur has been funding it himself without the help of the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture.

Earlier this year, Minister Gayton Mckenzie exposed all artists who benefitted from the COVID-19 relief fund, where both Arthur and his son gained R20k each from the department.

This list caused many X (formerly known as Twitter) users to comment on the names found on the list as some people used it for their non-existing businesses.

Despite being under public scrutiny for many things, the Kwaito star told the entertainment publication, “There is an unfortunate trend of the country’s entertainment industry of overlooking local talent and legends while readily supporting international artists. They continue to let our artists down.”

Reports by BusinessDay, state that, Arthur was amongst the people allegedly implicated in the mismanagement of R56m in community development funds released by the National Lotteries Commission (NLC).

Speaking to the news publication on the charges against the artists and those involved, Special Investigating Unit (SIU) spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago said:

“Prohibited and restrained from selling, disposing of, leasing, transferring, donating or dealing in any manner whatsoever concerning the immovable properties.”
