Duncan vs Big Zulu: What is the real meaning behind the diss track?

by Samantha Mochele

The South African hip-hop scene is once again in turmoil following Big Zulu’s latest track, 200 Bars, which has ignited a firestorm of controversy and tension among fans.

The track, a diss aimed at several artists in the industry, including Emtee and Duncan, has caught the attention of fans and critics alike. However, Big Zulu’s remarks about Duncan have set the stage for a new chapter in this ongoing musical feud.

In his latest diss track, 200 Bars, Big Zulu declares a mission to revive South African hip-hop, claiming that the genre is “sleeping” while amapiano, with its infectious beats, dominates the music scene.

According to Big Zulu, the focus has shifted away from hip-hop, and he’s here to shake things up and bring the genre back into the spotlight.

Duncan, not one to shy away from a challenge, has come out with a strong response ‘After Tears’. His response includes some explicit language and a fierce tone, clearly aiming to exceed Big Zulu’s 200 Bars. Adding fuel to the fire, Duncan’s track features a voice note where Big Zulu allegedly threatens trouble should they cross paths.

In an interview with The Basement podcast with Sandile M, Duncan detailed what is a diss in Hip-Hop culture, he stated that a diss is aimed at insulting or criticising another individual, often another artist. He further explained that the purpose of a diss track is to provoke a reaction and challenge the target’s reputation, and there are no rules as bad things are said.
