Understanding spiritual wellness

We are used to hearing about mental and physical well-being, which are most important factors in our life journey.

However, how well we are spiritually also matters because that’s where we get to be intact with our purpose.

Stride for Better Mental Health defines spiritual well-being as an expanding sense of meaning and purpose in life, encompassing personal ethics and morality. “It may include religious practices and engagement in a community based on this, but it can also include personal practices that are not defined by a religion or religious group.”

The above source states that people pursue spiritual wellness to achieve the following:

  • A sense of direction in life
  • Solace at uncertain times
  • Methods to earn inner peace and centre
  • A strategy to process grief during a period of loss
  • A greater ability to forgive and show affection
  • An opening up of imagination and creativity
  • decrease in anxiety and sadness
  • a general increase in well-being and health
  • Motivation to help people in need
  • A feeling of belonging among people who hold similar beliefs

There are several strategies that you can implement in order to accomplish the well-being of your spirituality. These include:

Nature bathing: According to Better Up, spending time in and with nature is beneficial if you want to be spiritually well. “Walk around your neighbourhood or a nearby park, or go for a hike, as you breathe in the fresh air. Sit on the beach and dip your toes in the water. Get away for a weekend camping trip and sleep under the stars.”

Self-introspection: The publication above also mentions that self-reflection allows deep connection with the heart and soul, allowing you to be aware of your life purpose, values, and faith. “You may journal or record yourself on video or audio and allow your thoughts and feelings out.”

Pray: Incorporate prayers into your daily routine to strengthen your connection with God, as faith is not a religion but a way to communicate with God, states Better Up. “Religion is the specific language used to communicate faith.”

Practice gratitude: The Tony Robbins publication suggests that you adopt an attitude of gratitude, as it can help eliminate fear and promote abundance. It is also advised that you examine limiting beliefs and replace them with empowering ones. “Make a list of everything you have to be grateful for. Remember, spiritual wellness is a mindset, but it’s also a set of actions you can take every day.”

Give back: The above-mentioned source further states that giving back is a powerful spiritual wellness activity that connects individuals to their community and purpose, fulfilling deep human needs like significance and contribution. “You won’t just answer the question, ‘What is spiritual health?’,  you’ll experience it for yourself.”
