Teen turns tissue paper into art masterpieces

Sphesihle Hlastswayo is an inspirational 19-year-old artist from Daveyton, East Rand. He creates his artwork on tissue paper.

The use of tissue paper as a medium is rather challenging as it is delicate to work on. However, Sphesihle seems to know just the trick for it. He says that he prioritises his patience and tries not to become frustrated by anything that typically goes wrong when he creates his masterpieces.

According to the news publication Times Live, the artist said: “Those early experiences taught me patience. The tissue paper, seemingly inadequate, was a lesson in resilience and creativity. It symbolised the struggle and the beauty of making something out of nothing.”

Some of his latest work includes using candles: “The smoke from the candle creates unique textures and depth, which enhances the portrait’s features and brings it to life in a distinctive and ethereal manner,” he explains.

“I really enjoy when the algorithm connects with my work. The aim is to be the best and be the Picasso of our next generation,” he further added.

“I’ve created similar works like Black Coffee and Oscar Mbo, which I also find special,” he shares. “I find every piece of work I do special because it leaves a spark of necessity,” he said.
