How to take care of your blind pet

Pets, like children, bring warmth and joy into the house, this is why pet owners treat their domestic animals with so much love and affection.

So, how do you accommodate your blind child? You make sure the environment is conducive for them and that they are well-trained for anything.

The same sentiment applies to having a blind pet, here are suggestions from experts who advocate for animal wellbeing.

Create a protected area: The Care publication which amongst many things, provides pet support, states that that it is crucial to provide a warm, secure space for your blind pet, like a sanctuary. You are encouraged to provide your pet with a cosy and secure area to spend time in. Dr Amber Andersen, a veterinarian advises keeping them comfortable with a spacious, softly cushioned bed.

Have regular conversations with your pet: The above-mentioned pet organisation states that it is even more crucial to have regular chats with your blind pet because they are already your most trusted confidant. It is said that the pet can locate himself with the aid of your voice. “Use your voice to get his attention before touching him so you don’t scare or startle him.”

Assist them to walk: “Walking your blind pet can be a wonderful bonding experience, but it’s important to ensure their safety,” states the MedVet publication. Medvet continues to advise owners of blind pets to choose a cosy leash or harness made especially for blind dogs. This will enable you to mentor them and avoid any possible mishap. “Additionally, start incorporating more voice commands during walks to help them navigate obstacles (curb, steps, etc.) and understand when to slow down, wait, or be cautious.”

Support using other senses: According to MedVet, blind pets must use their sharp senses of smell and hearing to get around. The publication states that by giving them toys with unique odours or sounds, you can help in their adaptation and that playtime will be more joyful because this stimulates their senses. “Additionally, consider applying scents to the legs of furniture to help them recognize their location within the house.” It is also suggested that you get a companion pet to improve your blind pet’s quality of life even more. “A pet that is sighted can act as a guide by using their sense of scent and hearing to point the way.”

Maintain a schedule: The Humane Society International which focuses on animal welfare advises that you practise consistency with your blind pet, stating that consistent walks, feeding times, and other activities that will help your pet learn what to anticipate.

Add sensory marks to the interior of the house: The abovementioned source also encourages that, to help pets navigate the house, place textured mats under food and water dishes, in front of litter boxes, and utilise carpet runners. To assist pets in remembering where sofas and chairs are, place throw rugs next to furniture.

Consider specialised training: The Animal Humane Society states that pets, especially those who are blind, require specialised training. According to the mentioned society, blind dogs can understand spoken instructions to follow and avoid obstacles. Scent-based activities, tug-of-war, and clicker training are beneficial for blind cats and since cats are excellent climbers and have a good sense of distance and height, they may also enjoy outdoor activities like perching and climbing, claims the Animal Humane Society.
