Award-winning SA singer Makhadzi brought glory to the country on an international stage.

Yet, the Red Card singer had to borrow money to go and grab the Best New International Act Award during the 19th annual BET Hip-Hop Awards held in Los Angeles on Sunday.

She beat Bellah, Cristale, Duquesa, Holly G, Jungeli, Oruam, Seyi Vibez, and South Africa’s Tyler ICU, to win her award.

Ahead of the awards Makhadzi, made a stunning revelation during an interview with MacG and Sol Phenduka on Podcast and Chill.

Through a prayer, she said that she needed to borrow money to cover travel expenses.

She added she had to loan money from loan sharks (mashonisa).

TimesLive reported: “They [my team] have to borrow money for me to fly business class because I have to be the superstar that I am. Because I believe in myself and my career, let me do everything and go there.”

The Limpopo-born singer made headlines last year when Sunday World reported she owed the taxman.

The publication reported that Makhadzi owed SARS a staggering R6.6 million. Her management team has since told The Citizen the amount has decreased and that they’ve managed to make payment arrangements.

They added they were unaware that she had to borrow money to attend the California-based award show.

On the heels of her win, Makhadzi announced she would host a One Woman Show at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Limpopo on December 21.
