A beloved doughnut shop in Cape Town has announced it’s closing its doors.

Grumpy & Runt is the brainchild of Johke Steenkamps and Carla Gontier. It specialises in making artisanal doughnuts, homemade deli sandwiches and a selection of vegan options.

The duo announced on social media that although they intended to trade throughout June, the establishment experienced its ‘worst ongoing production battle to date’, forcing them to close their doors immediately.

“Unfortunately, we are no longer in the position to keep our doors open anymore. We’ve faced some hard challenges that are simply too big for a small business to recover from,” Grumpy & Runt said.

“We wish we could personally thank each person who’s made this adventure even more amazing than we anticipated. It has been an honour to make doughnuts for all of you. Thank you for letting us be part of your stories. We don’t know what the future holds, but we hope to see you all again at some point. Thank you, thank you, thank you.”
