Diddy issues apology video as DA says they can’t prosecute him over Cassie hotel footage

by Staff Bona

US rapper Diddy, real name Sean John Combs, has issued an apology statement in response to video footage which CNN obtained over the weekend.

The video immediately went viral due to its graphic nature and showed the 54-year-old chasing after ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura in a hotel lobby in 2016.

Dressed only in a towel, the record producer could be seen grabbing the singer by the back of her neck as she tried to get away from him and into the hotel lift. He then shoved her to the ground and kicked her.

In his apology, filmed at an unknown location, Diddy said he had hit rock bottom and made no excuses. “My behaviour in that video is inexcusable. I take full responsibility for my actions in that video,” he explained.

The former couple were in a relationship from 2007 to 2018. In 2023 Cassie filed a lawsuit against Diddy, alleging he subjected her to a “decade-long cycle of abuse, violence and sex-trafficking.”

People called for Diddy’s arrest shortly after the hotel video went viral on social media. The LA District Attorney has now said that because the incident happened so long ago, the music mogul can’t be prosecuted.

“If the conduct depicted occurred in 2016, unfortunately, we would be unable to charge as the conduct would have occurred beyond the timeline where a crime of assault can be prosecuted,” the office of LA District Attorney George Gascón said in a statement.

The New York Post reported under California state law, the statute of limitations for simple and felony assault is one year and three years, respectively.
