Unathi shares how R750 spent on lawsuit was worth it

Radio personality and former Idols SA judge Unathi Nkayi recently reflected on how far she would go to ensure that her reputation is not dragged through the mud by the media.

The singer recently spoke at the Dynamics of Modern Law conference where she thanked lawyers for the role they play in assisting and bringing justice to South Africans in need of legal representation.

In her speech, the singer reflected on a time when media giant Media24 published an article claiming that the reason for her divorce from her ex-husband was because she cheated on him with her trainer.

The singer revealed that news spread like wildfire, both nationally and internationally which damaged her reputation. This later resulted in her missing out on several work opportunities since companies no longer wanted to work with her.

She lost both her job at KayaFM as well as Idols and was struggling to keep afloat.

“As a black single woman, your reputation and dignity are everything. So being labelled as a woman who cheats on her husband with her trainer destroyed me,” she said.

Not knowing how she would get herself out of the dark hole she was in, she turned to legal advice and was able to win her case.

She explained that she did not want her future generations to think that she was the home wrecker who broke up their family because of what was said in the media.

“I spent over R750K on that lawsuit, and they paid me R20K back. But it was worth every single rand I spent.”
