‘I can retire peacefully’ – Itumeleng Khune

One of Bafana Bafana’s former star goalkeepers Itumeleng Khune has come a long way since the troubling controversies surrounding his lifestyle towards the end of last year.

Following his suspension from Kaizer Chiefs, the veteran goalkeeper with the assistance from his childhood club Kaizer Chiefs was encouraged to participate in a series of rehabilitation programs that aims to help him on becoming a better version of himself.

This took place after the start arrived at training while under the influence of alcohol towards the end of last year.

During his time of rehabilitation, Itumeleng kept himself occupied with personal training schedules while keeping his social media followers informed on his progress.

More recently the 36-year-old was welcomed back from his suspension, but with Kaizer Chiefs renewing the contracts of goal keepers Bruce Bavuma and Brandon Petersen there appears be doubts on whether Khune would be given an opportunity to shine again, especially given the fact that his is maturing.

While Itumeleng has made previous references to wanting to emulate players like Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon and Portuguese player Cristiano Ronaldo who manage to perform well and win tons trophies despite their age – he now seems to embrace the prospect of retiring should he have no choice.

Touching on the topic he recently told the media that Kaizer Chiefs is the only club he ever wanted to play for and will play for until the end of his career.

“I’ve never seen myself representing any other brand besides Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana.”

“I told myself that I want to play here until I hang up my gloves,” he commented.

While he was sported doing some football analyst work with SABC Sport during the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) there is a likely chance that this might become a full-time after retirement.

He further added:

“I think I’ve done tremendously well when it comes to that part, and if I’m forced to retire at the end of the season, I can retire peacefully and start focusing on other things.”
