‘UMkhonto Wesizwe belongs to ANC’ – Fikile Mbalula on taking MK to court

by Bongiwe Mati

The African National Congress (ANC) secretary general Fikile Mbalula recently weighed in on the ANC’s decision to take uMkhonto Wesizwe party to court, just two months before the seventh democratic elections.

uMkhonto Wesizwe is a new political party led by former president, Jacob Zuma, among its leaders. uMkhonto Wesizwe was once a wing of the ANC and mainly formed by ANC veterans.

After the new party was announced, the ANC shared that they intended to take them to court for the use of something that belongs to them.

uMkhonto Wesizwe is a new political party led by former president, Jacob Zuma, among its leaders. uMkhonto Wesizwe was once a wing of the ANC and was mainly formed by ANC veterans.

After the new party was announced, the ANC shared that they intended to take them to court for the use of something that belonged to them.

While speaking to a journalist who asked him to clarify reasons why the ANC is going against the IEC’s approval of Umkhonto Wesizwe party registration, Fikile responded:

“It will be clarified in court, I respect the court, we have gone to court and we raised our case. Following the court process, we are putting a very cogent argument, concerning the deregistration of the MK party.”

Fikile also added that the court was just the beginning of the steps they, as a party, are willing to take, commenting:

“This is the first leg, the second one that is coming is the patent. This MK thing with the logo and everything belongs to the ANC and we’ll prove that in court. Jacob Zuma and his supporters must be ready for engagement on this one.”

Describing Jacob Zuma’s support of the MK party, Fikile commented:

“JZ (Jacob Zuma) has been the most destructive person to the national democratic revolution, he has put it in danger in many ways. Now he has thrown the last dice, putting it in a precarious position, mobilising members of the ANC and everyone else against the movement.”

The ANC Secretary General shared the interview clip on his social media platform with the caption:

“You don’t go to court without being confident. South Africa and the world know that uMkhonto we Sizwe belongs to the ANC, and we do not agree with what the IEC has done in their recognition process, hence the court process we are engaged in. One day an ANC conference will state that assets of the ANC were stolen by a former leader, and we will account.
