The supermarket company Shoprite Holdings, which owns the retail giant Checkers, has released a statement regarding the video of a Checkers Sixty60 driver being robbed at gunpoint.
The viral video – which is on its way to one million views – was posted on X (formerly Twitter) by the user @Mbonjeni1. The 53-second clip shows the driver sitting on his delivery motorbike outside of a property, presumably waiting for the customer to collect the parcels. While the driver seems to be distracted by his phone, the two thieves approach the vehicle, one aiming a gun at the driver.
The driver is then robbed of his phone and the groceries stored in the back of the bike. Immediately after the thieves leave, a third man approaches and takes off with the remaining bags.
The video sparked outrage from several people, with some placing blame on the government.

Acknowledging the crime committed, Shoprite Holdings said in their statement, “We are aware of the incident and thankful that no one was injured during the robbery. The company is in contact with the driver, has offered him trauma counselling and will be replacing his mobile phone.”
They added that Sixty60 also reached out to its customer, who was credited for the grocery order and the delivery fee.
The company said, “We denounce such acts of crime, which ultimately put the safety of our customers, employees and delivery partners at risk.”
It also called on the public to contact the hotline on 0800 118 879 should information concerning such crimes be available.
