‘There is no such a thing as black tax’- DJ Sbu

by Bongiwe Mati

When it comes to achieving success in some African families, those who rise to better levels are sometimes expected to look after their families, something termed by many as black tax.

Even though the term “black tax” may sound like a return on investment, some people don’t look at it that way. This is due to their love of family and understanding of the African phrase that says, “umntu ngumntu ngabantu,” (a person is a person through other people).

Recently jumping into this topic that often has conflicting views is businessman, podcaster and radio presenter DJ Sbu, who shared that there is no such a thing as black tax.

In a video currently circulating on X(formerly Twitter) the MoFaya energy drink owner added:

‘There is no such a thing as a black tax umuntu omnyama wena uncediwe la ukhona (you’re a black person and you were helped to get to where you are).’

He added also added

“Let’s remember who we are” he continued by quoting a scripture from the bible that reads, “Respect your mother and father for your days on earth to be longer”.

Explaining what the scripture means, he said:

“The scripture doesn’t only talk about your biological parents; it talks about elders. It talks about where you come from. It took an African village to raise you.

“Never turn your back on where you come from, because life will humble you.”

[TOUCHING] “There’s no such a thing as Black Tax, stop that nonsense.” ?
