The secrets to nourished and shiny hair

by Sergio Miller

Our hair plays a very important role in our daily lives. It goes beyond just being a feature that all humans have in common, but it also provides us with a sense of identity.

For instance, popular comedian Mark Lottering is known by his distinctive afro with the platinum strip through the middle, while TV presenter Carl Wastie however is popularly known for his Mohawk which transcends time.

While this is evidence of how we can become creative with how we can choose to use our hair to show off our personalities, it is important that we look after our assets just like the two gentlemen mentioned above, and ensure that our hairy assets are strong and well-nourished no matter the season.

Avocado Oil

New Directions Aromatics – a reputable hair blog – explains that avocado oil is rich in vitamins and essential fatty acids that can nourish and repair hair.

It can be added to a conditioner or hair mask for an intense conditioning treatment or used in a scalp massage to promote scalp health and reduce hair loss.

Coconut oil

Coconut oil is a natural oil that penetrates the hair and scalp to improve their health. It contains 80-90% saturated fat and 47% Lauric Acid, which helps it penetrate below the surface of hair and skin, protecting against everyday damage.

It also fights protein loss and provides relief for scalp issues like dandruff and dryness.

The above-mentioned blog added that Coconut oil is versatile and can be used in many ways, like as a pre-shampoo scalp treatment for dandruff or added to shampoo and conditioner formulations to enhance moisturizing abilities.

Yogurt

The lactic acid found in yogurt is dubbed as another key solution to keeping hair hydrated, preventing frizz and adding moisture, recommends woman’s lifestyle publication Woman’s Day.

Giovanni Vaccaro, founding member and artistic director of Glamsquad, tells Woman’s Day that being able to mix the mask with any ingredients is the best part about choosing this option.

“If you want shine and strength, mix in avocados,” he says. “If you want a PH balance, I like squeezing in lemons and limes. For ultimate shine, I like mixing in a light organic oil, like safflower seed or sunflower seed oil.”
