7 Aftercare tips to implement when getting a tattoo

Getting a tattoo is a form of self-expression and art that lasts a lifetime. However, the beauty of your new ink can only be fully appreciated if you take proper care of it during its crucial healing period.

Tattoo aftercare is a vital aspect of the experience. The importance of keeping your skin clean and moisturised can’t be overstated.

Here are 7 tips to ensure you are taking good care of your new tattoo:

Listen to your tattoo artist

One of the first steps in tattoo aftercare is to carefully listen to your tattoo artist’s instructions. They are professionals who understand the intricacies of the tattooing process and know what’s best for your skin. They will likely provide you with a set of guidelines for aftercare – follow them diligently.

Keep it clean

Immediately after getting inked, your tattoo will be covered with a protective bandage. It’s crucial to keep this covering on for the recommended time to prevent exposure to bacteria. Once you remove it, gently wash the tattooed area with mild, fragrance-free soap and lukewarm water. Pat it dry with a clean, soft towel.

Moisturise regularly

Hydration is key to the healing process. Apply a thin layer of fragrance-free, hypoallergenic moisturiser or tattoo-specific ointment to keep your skin hydrated. Avoid petroleum-based products, as they can clog pores and hinder the healing process.

Tip: Try Bepanthen for a trusted aftercare cream.

Avoid sun exposure

Protect your tattoo from direct sunlight during the healing period. UV rays can fade the colours and damage the skin, so keep your tattoo covered or use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 when venturing outside.

Say no to swimming

As difficult as it may be in summer, while your tattoo is healing, avoid swimming in pools, hot tubs, and open bodies of water. Prolonged exposure to water can soften the tattoo scabs, increasing the risk of infection. Plan to get your tattoo at a time that allows for enough healing time to show off in summer.

Avoid scratching and picking

It’s normal for your tattoo to itch during the healing process, but resist the temptation to scratch or pick at it. Doing so can disrupt the healing skin and result in scarring or colour loss.

Wear loose clothing

Tight clothing can irritate your tattoo, especially during the initial healing phase. Opt for loose, breathable fabrics to allow your skin to breathe and minimise friction.

If you feel the need, you can follow up with your tattoo artist and assess the healing process, touch up any areas if necessary and provide additional advice for long-term care.
