Danger of driving with worn out tyres

Driving a car with worn out tyres is very risky not only to you and the passengers inside your vehicle, but the risk extends to other cars in the same road as you.

Car service center AA shares that if cars owners made sure to change their tyres before they are worn out, the death toll on our roads would lessen.

If your tyres are worn, your fuel consumption and carbon mission will increase. If you overinflated them you are likely to have less control of your car and making your car unstable when you hit the brakes, something extremely dangerous shares insurance house and medical house Discovery.

Tyre specialists Dunlop notes the following issues that may arise when driving a car with worn out tyres.

  • Increased stopping distance.
  • Reduced road grip.
  • Lesser water dispersion.
  • Increased chances of aquaplaning in wet weather.
  • Higher chance of tyre blowouts, especially at higher speeds, due to excessive heat buildup of a tyre, as tread grooves usually allow for airflow between them to cool a tyre.

Noting a car safety demonstration which took place in Pretoria in order to understand the different levels of danger when driving with worn out tyres, AA states that when applying brakes, the car with new tyres stopped quicker than the one with worn out ones.

This they note is reason enough for people to check their tyres and change them when necessary. Another reason to always check your tyres is that if you get into an accident, the tyres are one of the first things your insurance will check. This will be the case even if your car was hit while not in motion.
