South African actress Thuso Mbedu joins Hollywood writers strikes.

After failed negotiations with production firms, 11 000 unionised TV and movie writers called for a strike in May, which was when the Writers Guild of America, (WGA) strike officially began. IOL claims that discussions with production firms were centred on issues like writer remuneration and the application of AI to scriptwriting.

The Writers Guild of America is a joint labour union effort between the Writers Guild of America, East, and the Writers Guild of America, West, which represent professional screenwriters in film and television.

Coinciding with the writer’s strike, on the 14 July, the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) went on strike after failed negotiations with major Hollywood studios.

Actors who are SAG-AFTRA members are not permitted to advertise their past, present, or potential on-screen projects as a result of this strike.

Many TV shows and movies have been forced to halt production since the writers’ and actors’ strike began, including some that were filming and showing fresh episodes. A few of the productions that have been put on hold as a result of the strike include Saturday Night Live and Quinta Brunson’s Abbott Elementary.

While taking to her Instagram stories, The Women King actress posted an image of herself standing with a placard in solidarity with the strikes. She joins the many Hollywood actors, such as Quinta Brunson, Vin Diesel, Tina Fey, Pete Davidson, Meryl Streep, and Brad Pitt, who have joined the WGA Writers Strike, as reported by Popsugar.
