‘It’s made me value life a bit more,’ Lira reveals after suffering a stroke

by Unathi Balele

South Africa musician Lira did her first media interview months after suffering a stroke on Radio 702’s The Upside of Failure, hosted by seasoned broadcaster Relebogile Mabotja.

In 2022, the star was brought back home from Germany after being diagnosed with a stroke.

Lira has a good relationship with her supporters and all those that have been concerned about her health. A few months ago, she gave supporters an update about her health and her healing journey.

In the radio interview, the star revealed she couldn’t tell her story over the past year because she couldn’t talk.

The stroke affected her speech, but as seen in the interview video, she is healing well.

Speaking about how she felt when realising she was having a stroke, she said:

“The sensation lasted about 15 minutes. It wasn’t painful. It was an uncomfortable feeling in my head. I walked into a restaurant, and I wanted to ask them where my hotel was…”

The Feel Good hitmaker said she cried as she was still young to be diagnosed with such an illness.

“Wow. I was shocked. I’m too young to have a stroke. Not me. Not me. Not me. I cried. I cried because how was I going to tell my parents? I was alone.”

However, going through the illness has made Lira value life more and has made her prioritise her health more.

“It’s made me value life a bit more. When you have [a] stroke, it calms you from the stress of life. When I’m stressed, I can’t speak, so it is important for me to keep calm and peaceful,” she revealed.
