Kwesta states the reason behind his iconic deep voice

by Staff Bona

South African rapper Kwesta has been on the music scene for over a decade and is known for his deep and hoarse voice that makes his sound so iconic.

Kwesta has collaborated with fellow South African musicians Jimmy Nevis and Cassper Nyovest as well as American rapper Wale. His unique voice adds to his lyricism and blend of kwaito and hip hop music.

He has gained a big following and he recently revealed on Zingah’s podcast how he got his deep voice, saying a cousin got him into smoking cigarettes even though it was something he didn’t want to do.

Zingah quipped, “This is a cigarette voice.”

“It is. This is not natural, I wasn’t born with it. It was cultivated,” Kwesta added.

“So a cousin of mine got into smoking cigarettes… but I always sh** on him and kind of went ‘The f*** are you doing?’ I was acting all high and mighty, all righteous and sh**, ” he explained.

Kwesta said he eventually tried it one time and got dizzy and told himself he’d never try it again. However, he tried it again and he even eventually got hooked. “I’ve smoked for a very long time and the voice kind of broke.

“You know when it breaks because you’re growing and then it breaks because you’ve been f**king it up the whole time? So that’s what happened with this voice.”
