How to become an emotionally intelligent person

by Unathi Balele

Emotional intelligence is the cornerstone of personal and professional success.

Unlike IQ, which is largely fixed, emotional intelligence can be developed and refined over time. Becoming emotionally intelligent empowers individuals to understand and manage their emotions, build stronger relationships, and handle life’s challenges with grace and resilience.

Let us explore the key steps to unlock the power of emotional intelligence and enhance your overall well-being by Mind Tool.

Self-Awareness:

The first step to becoming emotionally intelligent is to develop self-awareness. Pay attention to your emotions and identify how they manifest in different situations. Take note of triggers, patterns, and reactions you have to various events. Journaling, meditation, and introspection are helpful practices to gain insight into your emotional landscape.

Practice Empathy:

Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. Cultivate empathy by actively listening to people’s concerns and experiences without judgment. Put yourself in their shoes and try to grasp their perspectives. Empathy enhances your interpersonal relationships and fosters a deeper sense of connection with others.

Manage Stress and Emotions:

Emotionally intelligent individuals have the capacity to manage stress effectively. When faced with challenging situations, take a step back, and give yourself a moment to breathe. Employ stress-reducing techniques such as deep breathing, mindfulness, or engaging in physical activities like exercise or hobbies you enjoy. This practice helps you respond to stressors in a composed and constructive manner.

Develop Emotional Regulation:

Emotional regulation involves understanding that all emotions are valid while learning to control their intensity and expression. It’s essential to strike a balance between expressing your emotions and not letting them overpower your decision-making process. Avoid making impulsive decisions during moments of intense emotion, and instead, take time to cool off before responding.

Practice Social Skills:

Nurture your social skills by actively engaging in positive and meaningful interactions with others. Practice active listening, open communication, and constructive feedback. Understand the impact of your words and actions on those around you and make an effort to build supportive and uplifting relationships.

Continuous Learning and Improvement:

Emotional intelligence is not a destination but a journey of lifelong learning. Commit yourself to personal growth and improvement by seeking feedback, attending workshops, reading books, and staying open to new ideas and perspectives.
